In the final days of the previous year, at the invitation of the organizers of the Eurasia Grand Prix, Virág Sóthy visited China and acted as a jury member of the prestigious competition.

She is an associate professor at the Hungarian Dance University (HDU) and the editor-in-chief of the journal Dance Art. This significant professional opportunity marks the first milestone of the cooperation agreement between the Eurasia Grand Prix and the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix (BBGP), representing an important step for the Hungarian Dance University and its ballet competition, the BBGP, as well.

The Eurasia Grand Prix took place on December 28, 2025, in Suzhou, the “Venice of the East” (although, despite the name, residents of Bangkok would presumably object).

The Eurasia Grand Prix and the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix signed a cooperation agreement last December, ensuring that selected participants from each competition can demonstrate their skills at both events—an initiative that is also significant in terms of broadening cultural relations between the two countries. In this spirit, the grand prize winner of the Eurasia Grand Prix, the Chinese dancer Zhong Xuechen, was given the opportunity to join the training programme of the Hungarian Dance University and was also selected to compete in the 2026 Budapest Ballet Grand Prix.

In 2025, the competition was held for the second time, following Shanghai, this time in Suzhou, located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, a city that is home to a renowned ballet company. According to Virág Sóthy, the organizers’ long-term vision is to host the competition in major Chinese cities, with the aim of making the Eurasia Grand Prix a widely known and recognized event. An additional important consideration is the involvement of local dance academies and schools in each host city.

Two hundred competitors took part in the 2025 Eurasia Grand Prix. The Hungarian Dance University lecturer summarized the event as follows:

“The first part of the competition focused on Chinese classical dance, which reflects elements of traditional Chinese culture and philosophy. Artistic traditions such as Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism frequently appear in these dances. In China, training in this style begins at a very young age, and the competitors represented a wide range of age groups. Personally, it was a great experience for me to see the beautiful, colourful costumes and the dancers’ meticulously refined movements, which expressed a variety of emotions and stories. At the heart of these dances lies the precise control of every small part of the body, and it was astonishing to witness the level of self-discipline, body awareness, and control that dancers acquire at such a young age. The second part of the competition was devoted to ballet, where participants performed variations from the classical ballet repertoire that are also well known in Europe. The high standard of the competition is reflected in the fact that directors of world-renowned companies accepted the invitation to be jury members. It was a great honour that the artistic director invited me to visit her company the following day as well.”

The jury included Ji Pingping, Director of the Shanghai Ballet; Wang Quanxing, Director of the Suzhou Ballet Theatre; and Weng Yaosheng, Professor at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, as well as Virág Sóthy. During the event, she was also given the opportunity to present the Hungarian Dance University to both the audience and the participants. This was particularly important, as the Hungarian Dance University’s long-term goal is to welcome talented Chinese students into its programmes who wish to continue their studies in Europe.

These developments marked the beginning of an outstanding professional partnership in China at the end of December, one that is significant not only for the Hungarian Dance University and its Chinese partner, but also for the wider cultural relations between the two countries.

Almost exactly one year after last year’s competition, on November 20th, the third Budapest Ballet Grand Prix’s final took place at the National Dance Theatre. The junior category of the event brought the highest quality 90 minutes in the history of the BBGP, but many excellent talents showed their skills in the other categories as well.

40 participants made it to the final, so the program was long but enjoyable.

Before the final, the jury members unanimously said that they had seen many talented dancers in the past three days. Accordingly, – to our information – many 10-point ratings were received. It was also interesting to see how much the national character is visible in each dancer, which can be the work of the ballet artist, but of course it can also be the work of the master. It is worth emphasizing here: behind each competitor stands the serious work of many people. The role of the school and the masters is just as important as the performance of the competitor.

Photos by Adrienne Horváth

Several of the entrants said that they had rarely experienced so many opinions, styles and points of view, which helped them develop. The competition clearly supports ballet artists in gaining new perspectives.

The participants received feedback from a prestigious jury this year, but beyond the personal results, the consensus was that the artistic standard was the highest ever. The National Dance Theatre is a great venue, as always, but it is certain that the host of Friday’s gala show, the Müpa Festival Theatre, will also be an honorable venue of this high standard event, as always. Besides, the bests of the finalists will certainly create a great dance experience.

The question on Thursday afternoon was who would be the best? We had to wait until 9 pm to find out. That was when the BBGP competition director, Tamás Nagy, announced the jury’s decision, the top three places.

The Chairman of the Artistic Council of the Hungarian Dance University, the BBGP Competition Director, thanked the interest, which was not only great on site, as the final was followed by hundreds of people on the university and competition Facebook pages, where the afternoon symposium and the accompanying event on Stress Management were also broadcasted live.

18 competitors competed in the junior category, 4 couples in the pas de deux, and 18 competitors in the senior category. It is worth highlighting that 17 of them are students of the Hungarian Dance University, the organizer institution! Another aspect is that 23 foreign competitors participated in the best performances.

After 8 pm, the jury met and made its decision, chaired by Mária Aradi. The results were then announced in the auditorium of the National Dance Theatre. The top three winners in each category are listed below, but the winners of the numerous and valuable special awards, sponsorships and grants from national organizations will also be revealed at the Friday evening gala.

The final results of the 3rd Budapest Ballet Grand Prix (The first place Grand Prix winner will receive 3,000 euros, while second and third place will receive 2,000 and 1,000 euros respectively):

Last year, the Grand Prix was not awarded, but this year it was, so this wonderful recognition was particularly prestigious, with a cash prize of €3,000 and Herend porcelain, which the winner will receive on Friday, just like the first-place winners. The Grand Prix was presented by the chair of the jury, Mária Aradi, and Dr. Attila Simon, CEO of Herend Porcelain Manufactory Ltd., on Friday evening to the wonderful Valentina Mascinie (Conservatory of Ballet and Dance Annarella Sanchez – Cuba).

The Hungarian Dance University (HDU) and the Organizing Committee of the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix (BBGP) warmly welcome everyone to the book-signing event to be organised for New York City Ballet prima ballerina Megan Fairchild, whose book is titled “The Ballerina Mindset – How to Protect Your Mental Health While Striving for Excellence.”

Find out how to flourish in a high-pressure, competitive world with the secrets of one of America’s top ballerinas.

The Ballerina Mindset is the perfect “how-to” guide for dancers, athletes, artists, or anyone who finds it challenging to stay balanced in a difficult and stressful environment.

As the book says, ballet may look glamorous and easy to the audience, but in reality, it takes constant hard work and humility. It’s not enough for a dancer to practice six to eight hours a day before a performance—they still have to make it look simple!

Megan Fairchild, a distinguished judge at the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix, prima ballerina of the New York City Ballet, and former Broadway star—not to mention a mother and a graduate student—knows these challenges very well. In her book The Ballerina Mindset, she shares the experiences she has gained over nearly two decades of her career. Drawing from her own life, she shows how she dealt with stage fright, negative reviews, and packed schedules, offering ideas on how we can handle similar challenges ourselves.

The book is inspiring, easy to read, and very relevant! This is a special chance to meet an amazing artist, hear her thoughts, and get your copy personally signed.

The organizers and supporters of the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix (BBGP) held a full-house press conference in the foyer of the National Dance Theatre. The 3rd Budapest Ballet Grand Prix, an international ballet competition, will be organized by the Hungarian Dance University (HDU) between November 17 and 21. Alongside the university, the National Dance Theatre and Müpa will also serve as venues for the event.

At the press conference, Erika Miklósa — Chair of the Board of Trustees of the main sponsor, the MOL – New Europe Foundation — was unable to attend in person, but in her welcome speech, which she sent separately to the Organizing Committee, she emphasized that what began as a great idea has now become a prestigious competition, thanks to the dedication of the organizers.

“…For the third year now, I have been witnessing the magical rise of the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix, an excellent young ballet dancers exposure. In a very short time, it has earned international recognition and is now a significant ballet competition in Central Europe, attracting young talents from all over the world. It simultaneously offers a window onto the international scene and provides opportunities for the most gifted to receive ballet scholarships in Central Europe and a launchpad for their careers. Talent truly flourishes when there is space to grow and a community that believes in it. The MOL – New Europe Foundation places special emphasis on supporting young talents and their mentors,” emphasized the Kossuth Prize-winning opera singer and recipient of the Order of Saint Stephen.

At Friday’s press conference in Budapest, Márta Fodor-Molnár, Rector of the Hungarian Dance University (HDU), stated that applications for the competition — aimed at young dancers aged 14 to 24 — will close on Friday. So far, more than 140 registrations have been received from 22 countries, and 80 young ballet dancers will be selected from among the applicants. The event also offers various ballet masterclasses to complement the competition experience and enhance the dancers’ skills.

Irén Novák, Deputy State Secretary for Arts and Community Culture at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, commented on the heightened interest surrounding this year’s competition, stating that it is no coincidence, as Hungarian dance and ballet artists are world-renowned. She recalled that talented young Hungarian dancers achieved outstanding results at last year’s competition. “Those who come here to study also help spread the good reputation of our country,” she said, emphasizing that the event also plays an important role in shaping the country’s image abroad and contributes significantly to ballet education in Europe.

János Kiss, Kossuth Prize-winning ballet artist and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the foundation overseeing the renewal of the university, spoke about how the BBGP offers a true ballet opportunity for advancement for students, as well as for both young and more experienced dancers. “It’s a chance for them to take the next step in their careers and to be noticed by renowned leaders and artists from the world’s major dance companies,” emphasizing the of importance of ballet opportunities, ballet training and professional growth.

At the event, Tamás Nagy, Director of the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix, a great ballet competition in 2025, gave a detailed introduction of the international ballet jury members, highlighting that their presence is a true guarantee of the event’s high professional standards. In keeping with tradition, the chair of the international jury will once again be a globally recognized Hungarian ballet artist — in 2025, this honour goes to Master Mária Aradi, who was greeted with a standing ovation at the press conference.

It was also revealed, somewhat humorously, that Tamás Nagy — who also serves as Chair of the Artistic Council at the Hungarian Dance University, the organizing body of the competition — was the subject of a student’s thesis.

As for the jury, ballet competition judges include Mária Aradi, Megan Fairchild, Mário Radačovský, Kinsun Chan, Jahn Magnus Johanssen.

Mária Aradi is a globally recognized Hungarian ballet artist and the chair of the international jury for BBGP 2025. She has had a distinguished career as a principal dancer at several major ballet companies. Her expertise and artistic insight make her an invaluable leader for the competition’s jury panel. Today, she still works tirelessly as a teaching ballet master of the Hungarian National Ballet and as an invited guest instructor of the Hungarian Dance University.

Megan Fairchild is a New York City Ballet principal, and she is renowned for her technical skill and expressive performances. She brings extensive experience in both classical and contemporary ballet to the jury. Megan is celebrated for her versatility and commitment to advancing young dancers’ careers.

Mário Radačovský, Artistic Director of The Ballet of the National Theatre Brno, is an accomplished Slovak ballet artist known for his dynamic stage presence and strong technique. He has performed leading roles in several international ballet companies. Mário’s experience as both a dancer and mentor enriches the jury’s perspective in evaluating competitors.

Kinsun Chan, a Swiss-Canadian choreographer, Ballet Director of the Semperoper Ballet, is a principal dancer with the Hong Kong Ballet and recognized for his elegant style and powerful performances. He has been praised for his artistry and ability to connect with audiences worldwide. Kinsun brings a global viewpoint to the BBGP jury through his international career.

At the end of the press conference, Dr Attila Simon, CEO of Herend Porcelain Manufactory Ltd., presented the prestigious award crafted by the renowned company, which will be given to the top performers of the BBGP. Following this, the CEO spoke about a special exhibition featuring unique and rarely seen Herend pieces, which has been opened in the foyer of the National Dance Theatre.

At the press conference, it was repeatedly emphasized that there could be no better venue for the competition than the National Dance Theatre. Several speakers expressed their gratitude to its director, Péter Ertl — a former acclaimed dancer — for hosting the event, as well as to Csaba Káel, CEO of Müpa.

More than 110 applications have been received so far for the third BBGP, but it’s not too late to sign up. At the request of our partner institutions, registration for the competition will remain open until October 17.

Applicants are showing increasing interest in the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix, with the number of applications received already exceeding the previous record, and nearly 110 registrations received from all over the world. The already high standard is therefore likely to be even higher, and at the request of the partner institutions, registration for the competition is open until October 17.

Members of the organizing committee have reported that, at the request of several partner institutions of the organizing university, the application deadline has been extended, so it is certain that the previous application record will be significantly broken.

It is a fantastic success that such a diverse and high-quality field has been formed, with ballet artists from more than 24 countries interested in the competition to be held from November 17 to 21.

From the outset, the organizers’ goal has been to make the event, organized by the 75-year-old Hungarian Dance University, a true meeting point for the European and global dance scene. Applications have been received from most European countries, as well as from the United States, China, South Korea, Japan, and Kazakhstan. We are delighted that there has been such significant interest.

For young dancers, one of the greatest challenges worldwide is trying to secure a contract with a company after completing the first stage of their studies. Many cannot overcome this critical hurdle and fail to join a renowned company. Ezgi Toydemir, a graduating classical ballet student (BBGP 2023 Senior category 3rd place) at the Hungarian Dance University, which organizes the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix, performed a powerful choreography by Noémi Kulcsár on this topic. The piece was presented at the exam concert held at the Hungarian State Opera House, and it was tremendously successful.

Seeing Ezgi Toydemir’s memorable performance raises an important question: how many talented young dancers see their promising careers fail simply because they cannot secure a contract with a company that supports their further development? At the same time, Toydemir and many of her peers—both recent and former graduates of Budapest’s Hungarian Dance University (HDU)—are proof that the institution stands out internationally: over 90% of the university’s successful graduates go on to join prestigious professional companies, a rate well above the global average.

We spoke about this sensitive and important topic with Noémi Kulcsár, the choreographer of Ezgi Toydemir’s piece and one of the leading faculty members at the Hungarian Dance University. A Harangozó Gyula Award-winning choreographer, dancer, and associate professor, Kulcsár began her professional dance career in Hamburg and Munich, and since 2005, she has worked as a freelance dancer and choreographer in Hungary.

“This is an interesting choreography, and I think one of the reasons it was so successful is because it’s very timely, and Ezgi was also excellent in it,” said Noémi Kulcsár. “She performed it fantastically, danced it in a captivating way. She was able to convey real emotions on stage because she herself has experienced it multiple times — going to auditions and getting rejected. Fortunately, her story turned out well, as she received a significant opportunity with the ballet company of the opera in Łódź, Poland. After facing rejection, what can also matter is that young people often become a bit more experienced after going through such traumas. Meanwhile, here at the university, together with my fellow instructors, we strongly support them. We talk about their experiences, analyze the situations, and afterwards, even using our personal connections if needed, we help them.”

It is also well known that there are few boys in the world of ballet, which is precisely why — it might be fair to say — the situation for girls is extremely difficult. The choreography also reflects on this issue.

“Yes, this has naturally affected me as well, as many companies are actively seeking male dancers, which makes it extremely difficult for female dancers to find positions—even if they are highly skilled and beautiful performers. As the director of a dance company (https://en.tellabor.com/), I also face this reality. As far as I can see, however, the Hungarian Dance University stands out by providing a high-level, methodical classical ballet education while also placing strong emphasis on modern and contemporary styles, even within the classical ballet specialization. This allows our graduates to enter the professional dance world with a comprehensive and versatile skill set. From the first years of their studies, students gain significant practical experience, performing in productions such as The Nutcracker, participating in exams, and even working as interns with companies. We train them to become true dance artists, and this approach appears to be very successful.”

Indeed, as they say in sports: “What matters is what’s on the scoreboard!”

And the results clearly speak in favour of the Hungarian Dance University.

Between April 13 and October 13 2025, the World Expo is taking place in Osaka, Japan, with the participation of 161 countries and nine international organizations. It is a great honour that János Kiss, Kossuth Prize-winning ballet artist and Chairman of the Board of Trustees maintaining Hungarian Dance University (HDU), along with HDU’s manager Asuka Horio, had the opportunity to represent Hungarian dance and ballet art, as well as Hungarian Dance University at EXPO2025 in the last days of June. They presented the university’s programmes and its increasingly well-known international ballet competition, the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix.

Credit: 2025 Hungary Balázs Mudrák

The organizers are expecting over 28 million visitors to the World Expo, primarily from the East Asian region, which includes Japan, South Korea, and China. As this region represents the world’s largest outbound tourism market, successful Hungarian participation could significantly increase inbound tourism from this area.

EXPO2025 Hungary Nonprofit Ltd. has previously emphasized that, beyond tourism, Hungary’s presence at the Expo could also significantly strengthen cultural and business relations. Hungary is one of Japan’s key economic partners in Central Europe, and last year, the majority of investments from the East Asian region to Hungary originated there. In addition to building the country’s image, the Hungarian Pavilion also aims to create opportunities for many Hungarian businesses to develop partnerships and expand their business networks.

Asian presence in the field of dance is also remarkably strong and of exceptionally high quality, with professional institutions that are outstanding even by global standards. This makes János Kiss’s visit all the more significant and joyful, as he performed and held a workshop at the World Expo alongside director László Velkei and the Győr Ballet Company.

János Kiss said the following about his five-day stay:

“I travelled with the Győr Ballet Company and was given the opportunity by the leadership of the Hungarian House to give a presentation about the training programmes of Hungarian Dance University and our successful Budapest Ballet Grand Prix competition. The organizers invited the directors of 15 Japanese schools and several children to the event. It was a great joy to see that the room was so full of interested attendees that some had to stand in the hallway, and the presentation was received with great warmth. The next day, the Győr Ballet Company performed the outstanding piece Romance, set to the music of Zoltán Kodály, which was also met with great success.”

He also added:

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Asuka Horio for her support! As a former dancer of the Győr Ballet Company, and a member of the university’s management, she has helped us tremendously. She interpreted in Japanese and gave an excellent presentation in her native language, which was a great success!”

The Hungarian Dance University is very popular in Asia, with more than half of its international students coming from Japan. This, along with the success of the performances, clearly shows how much people there appreciate Hungarian dance education.

By building cultural relations and supporting young talents, Hungary and Japan are creating lasting value for the arts and for future generations.

Tamás Nagy, President of the Artistic Council of the Hungarian Dance University, Associate Professor, former distinguished and renowned ballet artist, visited Tokyo and Seoul. The professional trip was also important for the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix in November and for the HDU. His report can be read here.

A few months ago, I was honored to be invited as a jury member for this year’s Ballet Japan Cup alongside incredible directors and teachers from around the world. Since I was already scheduled to teach Ballet Master Classes in Seoul, it was the perfect opportunity to witness and support young talent in Tokyo.

Before the competition, I also attended the final selection of the D&D Masterclass, offering talented students invitations to the Budapest Ballet Grand Prix (BBGP). It’s always inspiring to see young artists perform live, receive feedback, and grow on stage.

The competition showcased an incredibly high level of artistry. I was thrilled to award scholarships, invitations to our Summer Intensive Ballet Course, and spots for BBGP 2025. I can’t wait for the Hungarian audience to witness their brilliance in Budapest!

Mark your calendars: Budapest Ballet Grand Prix – November 17-21, 2025! Stay tuned for applications. See you there!
