The Department of Art Theory held a highly successful workshop conference on May 16, 2025, in the Senate meeting room of the Hungarian Dance University. The conference was part of the series of events organized to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian Dance University.

There was a lively interest in the conference: students, lecturers, and external guests all showed up in great numbers.

Photos by Pál Csillag

The eleven lecturers currently teaching at the department, including Márk Gara, Alirán Gelenczey-Miháltz, Rita Horváthné Major, Ilona Kovács, Zsuzsa Kővágó, Péter Nagy, Judit Radák, Kata Rákos, Attila Retkes, Ildikó Sirató, Rita Széll, as well as Dr Róbert Károly, who taught at the university’s Department of Art Theory for several decades, and still takes a keen interest in the institution’s work, covered the extremely rich and diverse fields of art theory, from ancient times to the present day.

The presentations at the workshop conference examined dance not merely as an artistic or ritual phenomenon, but placed it within a broader cultural, philosophical, and historical context, highlighting that movement is one of the oldest and deepest forms of intellectual and sensory experience.

The event was concluded by the closing speech given by Head of the Department Ilona Kovács, who announced that the Department of Art Theory plans to hold the workshop conference again in two years.

Dr Ilona Kovács, Head of the Department of Art Theory at the Hungarian Dance University (HDU) represented our institution at the workshop-conference held at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien) on 17 May.

The event themed “Historical Perspectives on Musical Commissions” was attended by eminent representatives of international musicology from Austria, Hungary, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. Topics ranged from the early 18th century to the present day, from Europe to North America.

American music historian Louis K. Epstein acted as the keynote speaker of the conference. After his exposition, the individual lectures took place, each of which was limited to a maximum of 15 minutes.

Elisabeth Reisinger (conference organiser), Ilona Kovács and Louis K. Epstein

Hungary was represented by Zsombor Németh from the Institute of Musicology, who presented Béla Bartók’ works composed for commissions, music competitions and requests, and Ilona Kovács from the Hungarian Dance University.

The topic of Ilona Kovács’s lecture, “The Creative Process of Ernst von Dohnányi’s American Rhapsody (op. 47)”, focussed on the history and analysis of the composition of Ernő Dohnányi’s American Rhapsody (op. 47), which was a commissioned work.

The description of the international workshop-conference is available here.

Participation in this prestigious international musicology conference not only increased the reputation of the Hungarian Dance University but it also helps expanding future international relations.

It is the third time that the Department of Art Theory at the Hungarian Dance University (HDU) will organise an art lecture entitled “Adventures in Art Theory”. This time, Dr Sándor Kovács, Professor Emeritus of the Liszt Ferenc University will hold a lecture on the work of the French Six.

The French Six was officially formed in January 1920. The group’s name was given by the music critic and composer Henri Collet, who first used the term “French Six “in the journal Comœdia. Although Jean Cocteau was certainly behind the articles, the name Les Six (The Six) was given by Collet following the formation of “The Russian Five”.

In addition to the work of the group that included Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc and the only female composer, Germaine Tailleferre, Sándor Kovács points out Erik Satie’s role played in the creation of the group of composers, who, along with Milhaud and Poulenc, also played a significant role in the history of dance and music in 20th century France.

The lecture will start at 3:30pm on 1 March 2024 at the ifj. Nagy Zoltán theatre hall.

All welcome.
