The two talented classical ballet graduates of the Hungarian Dance University were signed by the Opera Ballet Company last year, which is a testament to their talent and the quality of their training at the university. Although Kamill and Janka are currently preparing for their exam concert, they have taken the time for an interview.

Talking about work and university study, Janka said it is a great pleasure for them to have this opportunity and they are very grateful for it. They did not have any difficulties during the rehearsal process, because their ballet teacher Master Radina Dace was very flexible and they could always adapt the rehearsals to their academic schedule.

When asked about the fact one year ago they were offered the opportunity by the Hungarian National Ballet and the Opera and they have actually started their active career as a ballet dancer, Kamill said he couldn’t believe he had been offered a contract, and he has been grateful ever since.

Kamill revealed they are now preparing for their exam concert.

“It consists of three acts. The first act is an arrangement of Don Quixote, where I play the role of Basil, a poor barber, but all the more charming, always flirting with the girls. The second act is composed of various ballet pieces and dances by choreographers”, he said.

Discussing the years they spent at the Hungarian Dance University, Janka mentioned that the nine years at university were full of challenges and opportunities, but there were also difficult times.

“I am very grateful for the many opportunities to perform on stage and for the many opportunities to perform abroad and in international competitions, which gave me a lot of experience”, she added.

Kamill believes that the performance that will take place at the Dance Theatre on 11 June and the one at the Opera on 23 June are worth visiting because in addition to the many technical challenges, they put a lot of emphasis on developing the message of the roles, which is very important for the audience. Both performances are very colourful in terms of repertoire, and he can only recommend them to anyone who loves dance.

The students of master Mónika Barna and master József Medvecz were taught by several masters including Daria Klimentová, former prima ballerina of the English National Ballet, Tamás Solymosi, director of the Hungarian National Ballet and Mário Radačovský, artistic director of Ballet NdB.

Janka Dobra and Kamill Kökény-Hámori took the first place in pas de deux professional. In the classical discipline they were prepared by Mónika Barna and József Medvecz, while in the modern discipline they were assisted by Attila Kalmár.

Hiraku Saito won a first place in solo professional category. In the classical and modern discipline he was prepared by József Medvecz and Tamás Darai, respectively.

In the choreography professional category it was Lukács Konrád Kópiás that managed to beat his rivals. His preparation teacher in the uncontrollable groove discipline was Attila Kalmár.

HDU students were accompanied on the spot by Attila Kalmár. Deputy Rector Szilárd Macher was also among the members of the international jury.

The award ceremony took place on the last day of the competition on Sunday, 28 May 2023.

HDU nominated twelve dancers in the Vienna event. The youngest competitor is a third-year student while the oldest one is in the eighth-year at HDU. Eleven of HDU’s contesters reached the finals, which is an excellent result. If we add to this the six students who took part in the Gala, we can see that those who did not win prizes also represented a truly high standard.

As mentioned earlier, HDU’s student Saito Hiraku won the top prize both in the Classical Ballet II category and the Senior Outstanding Performance. He was coached by József Medvecz.

Janka Dobra and Kamill Kökény-Hámori, coached by Mónika Barna and József Medvecz, respectively, won second place in the classical ballet junior II category. Tamás Solymosi, member of the jury of the VIBE competition, Ballet Director of the Opera House, offered scholarships to both students at the award ceremony.

Rozi Szabó and Sámuel Gáspár, coached by Tamás Csizmadia, won a one-week scholarship at the Milano Contemporary Ballet, Milan, Italy.

HDU students won three first prizes, the award for the best male dancer as well as other valuable achievements. Hungarian jury member Mónika Barna said the jury are confident that the students of the Hungarian Dance University (HDU) are well-trained and professional.

As the main aim of the event is to provide an opportunity for young dancers to develop their network and to be seen by their peers, teachers and company leaders, the weekend was particularly important and successful. It was also added that HDU students always perform very well at the “Domenico Modugno” prestigious competition.
