The final year students of the modern class of the Hungarian Dance University (HDU) are the third generation in the history of the university’s who have the opportunity to spend a full semester in their fifth year within the framework of their traineeship. This time we have interviewed Levente Zoltán Nagy, who is currently taking part in the rehearsal process of the National Theatre’s medieval fairy-tale play titled “I am Blood” and will also act in the play.
How did you get the chance to rehearse at the National Theatre?
Through Bozsik Yvette Foundation I am participating in the rehearsal process – and will also act – of the National Theatre’s medieval fairy-tale play titled “I am Blood”, which is directed by Jan Fabre. It’s an interesting task because it’s real theatre in which you actually have to dance, sing and speak as well.
How tiring or unusual is it for you?
It’s a real challenge. I feel it’s mentally and physically demanding, but more importantly, it’s a real pleasure to be involved in this beautiful work and to experience the evolution of the piece.
Have you been working on it for a long time? How big was the task?
The rehearsal process lasted six weeks. Every day was a challenge, we had long and hard rehearsals, but I loved every minute of it. The team was super good, and the choreographers were extremely nice. It was a diverse company, as we worked with French, German and Belgian trainers and creators from the Traubleyn / Jan Fabre company. The rehearsals were in a great atmosphere, and I learned a lot and got a lot from this opportunity both artistically and personally.
Wouldn’t it have been more useful to spend your internship abroad?
I didn’t go abroad, but I don’t mind, because it was like a big trip, like being somewhere else. Rehearsals were in English, I met a completely different mentality, there was incredible humility and humanity in everyone. There was and is a lot of serious work going on, and I feel like I’m benefiting a lot from it.
