This piece by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky has been always part of the Advent preparations for decades. The Hungarian Dance University’s The Nutcracker Cross-section performance is always sold out.
The choreography, following the footsteps of illustrious predecessors, was created by the teachers of the Hungarian Dance University, and will be performed by the students of the institution.
“The Nutcracker Cross-section was first put on stage eight years ago, because the previous Nutcracker performance at the Thalia Theatre ceased to be played,” said Szilárd Macher DLA, Vice Rector for Education. “We thought the tradition should be continued, because the performance is important in many ways. It’s important for the students, but also for the potential future students sitting in the audience, so its role in educating the audience and attracting the next generation cannot be neglected. Beáta Schanda, who passed away recently, reminded us during the preparations that it is easier to keep children’s curiosity alive with a dance piece of a suitable length for them. Accordingly, seven years ago we created a one-act ballet from a ballet that was mostly performed in two acts, so that the story could be followed by children and parents alike. It was a huge task, but the three of us, György Szakály and Mónika Barna, took on the choreography, while Melinda Szitt and Éva Brieber also helped us.”
The Vice Rector also emphasized that the feedback in the past years has been very positive. Last year they held 21 performances in two weeks, the last one in Cegléd. He also added that year after year, the play provides almost every student, from preparatory to senior, with a serious role and development opportunity.
