It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that dr. János Fügedi, university professor and instructor at the Department of Folk Dance of the Hungarian Dance University, passed away at the age of 71 on January 31 2025.

János Fügedi had taught at several departments of the Hungarian Dance University since 1988, primarily focusing on subjects related to Labanotation. In addition to teaching, he conscientiously supervised the theses of students and took on university leadership and committee duties. His humane strictness and unique sense of humour created exceptional class atmospheres. We are grateful for the professional and friendly conversations and advice.

János Fügedi was the president of the Hungarian Society of Dance Science, the vice-president of the Dance Science Working Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a former president of the International Council of Kinetography Laban, a member of the editorial board of the journal Dance and Education, and an organizer and section leader at the scientific conferences of the Hungarian Dance University. As a researcher, author of scholarly studies and books, folk dance collector, and teacher, he made invaluable contributions to the fields of dance science and Labanotation.

His awards, such as the ‘For Dance Science’ distinction, the Pesovár Ernő Memorial Plaque, and the Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit, all provide evidence of his outstanding professionalism.

The Hungarian Dance University regards János Fügedi as its own deceased.
